Southgate: Winning over Holland is the biggest achievement of my career

England manager Gareth Southgate believes reaching the Euro 2024 final in Germany is the greatest achievement of his career with the Three Lions, with the runners-up reaching their first ever away final.

England beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-final on Wednesday thanks to a last-gasp goal from substitute Ollie Watkins.

Asked how he would rate the achievement, Southgate told ITV: “I think it’s the best, it’s another point of reference, but we played well throughout the game.

Gareth added: It was a complicated game, they kept changing their style of play, we had to keep changing our defensive style in particular but I thought we caused them problems throughout the game, and the end was very special for the team, it is an example of what this team offers in the tournament.

He explained: Sometimes the substitutes make the difference. The most important thing is that the whole team is ready to play the match. It is difficult to choose from among 26 players.

He concluded: “I am very happy with Ole’s brilliance. We felt that he was the right fit for us, given that we had dropped a bit and Harry had a knock in the first half. Ole pressed well, and we thought it was the right time to bring him on.”
